This paper presents the special issue, justifying the relevance of the nexus school/lifelong learning for educational theory and practice. The articles, as a whole, provide a argued and critical problematization of the theme, leading to a re-definition of school’s identity and action and solicit to bring many different learning experiences in a unitarian meaning of education. In this perspective, geared to continuity / discontinuity, school quality appears as a crucial element to ensure that lifelong learning is also, and above all, lifelong education.
