Abstract – Starting from a reading of education as a process of liberation of subjectivity, this essay examines three constituent and complementary movements of education, namely the maieutic drawing out, the transporting of the educating desire and, finally, the dissuading of the Socratic demon. The task of education is to draw out the essence of the human being and to deal with the unrepeatability of human being, encouraging a progression from interiority towards exteriority, triggered by an encounter that takes place on the threshold of the intersubjective relationship. Is it possible today to still be inspired by Socrates as a teacher? Is it possible to find in Socrates a current rationale for educating to cultivate doubt, to help give birth to souls and to give birth to consciences?
