Abstract – The paper presents the outcomes of exploratory research aimed at conducting a preliminary analysis of the international literature concerning the processes of involving students with disabilities in individualized educational planning. The results and the discussion are focused on the main theoretical-methodological orientations and the educational programs designed and tested. The narrative synthesis provides theoretical-methodological orientations tending to focus on two aspects: the planning dimension of the process with the specification of certain phases that affect not only the IEP meetings but the work of the entire school year, and the focus on the constructs of self-determination and self-advocacy. The studies reported were conducted almost exclusively in a North American context and the programs identified undoubtedly reflect their specificities. These results could however be interesting and functional also in the national panorama in a logic of implementation of the practices implemented: the indications could in fact support the ‘Gruppi di Lavoro Operativi’ and the teaching teams to conceive a design in which the involvement of the student with disabilities is real and significant in every moment of the process.
