Abstract

This paper examines the portions of Lanfranc of Milan’s Chirurgia magna translated into Middle English and preserved in a surgical treatise written in 1392 and transmitted by London, Wellcome Library, MS 564. These readings are compared with MSS Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ashmole 1396 and London, BL, Add. 12056, the only known witnesses of the Middle English translation. Attention is given to textual features such as lexical choices, explanatory notes, and lacunae. The aim of the study is to analyse and highlight patterns of agreement and divergence among the witnesses, offering insights into the relationships between different branches of the Middle English tradition and the processes of textual adaptation in the 1392 treatise.
