A reflection on the analogy between translation and education could offer a significant contribution to the contemporary debate on the notion of Bildung. Translation is – as education – always an ethical-practical mediation. In the same way, a formative translation can indicate the latencies of the educational experience operating in the passages of cultural heritage and of transmission. For Humboldt, translation illuminates a double Bildung process at work: the educational one, which concerns values and legacy, and the formative one, which concerns knowledge, skills, transmission. These themes that characterized the debate of the end of the XVIII century, especially between Goethe, Herder and Humboldt around the Bildung and in relation to the hermeneutic theory of translation, are very relevant and necessary today for a pedagogical reflection as the ethics of educational practice.
